"Au nom du peuple américain, j'étends mes félicitations au peuple guinéen qui vient d'achever de manière pacifique et réussie le premier tour de scrutin dans les premières élections libres que le pays ait tenues depuis son indépendance en 1958. Il y a quelques mois encore, le monde avait été consterné par le massacre et le viol de manifestants pro-démocratie, perpétrés le 28 septembre. D'aucuns avaient craint que la brutalité et l'instabilité ne consument la Guinée et ne se répandent même au-delà de ses frontières pour menacer le redressement d'une région déchirée par les guerres. Le peuple guinéen a néanmoins fait preuve d'un courage et d'une détermination extraordinaires pour faire sortir son pays de la crise et pour établir la voie qui le mènera à un avenir démocratique. Ce faisant, les Guinéens ont bénéficié de la direction avisée du président par intérim, le général Sékouba Konaté, qui a concentré des efforts intenses et urgents sur la transition du pays vers un Gouvernement civil. Les États-Unis s'étaient joints à d'autres membres de la communauté internationale, dont l'Union africaine et la CEDEAO, pour soutenir ces élections, mais ce sont le Gouvernement Guinéen, la Commission Electorale, la société civile, les dirigeants politiques et le peuple de la Guinée qui les ont menées à bien. En effet, la force de caractère dont a fait preuve le peuple guinéen en revendiquant ses droits démocratiques transmet un message puissant au monde entier.
Le peuple de la Guinée a l'occasion de consolider cet accomplissement historique maintenant qu'il se dirige vers le second tour des élections. J'exhorte toutes les parties en Guinée à continuer de choisir la primauté du droit et la participation politique pacifique plutôt que les divisions ethniques et la violence. Alors qu'ils s'avancent vers l'avenir, les Guinéens pourront toujours compter sur l'appui des États-Unis."

Statement by the President on the Elections in Guinea.
On behalf of the American people, I extend my congratulations to the people of Guinea, who peacefully and successfully conducted an initial round of voting in the country’s first free elections since becoming an independent state in 1958. Just months ago, the world was shocked by the September 28 massacre and rape of pro-democracy demonstrators in Conakry. Many feared that brutality and instability would consume Guinea, and even spread across its borders to threaten the recovery of a war-weary region. The Guinean people, however, demonstrated extraordinary courage and determination to pull their country out of crisis, and to chart a new course toward a democratic future. They were supported by the leadership of Interim President General Sékouba Konaté, who has focused intensely and urgently on transitioning the country to civilian rule. The United States joined other members of the international community, including the African Union and ECOWAS, in supporting these elections, but it was the Guinean government, the electoral commission, civil society, the political party leadership, and the people of Guinea who made it succeed. Indeed, the character and resilience of the Guinean people in claiming their democratic rights sends a powerful message around the world.
The people of Guinea now have an opportunity to build on this historic achievement as they move toward a second round of voting. I urge all parties in Guinea to continue to choose the rule of law and peaceful political participation over ethnic division and violence. They can continue to count on the support of the United States as they move forward.
